LA VERDAD SOBRE LAS TASAS UNIVERSITARIAS Y LOS RECORTES EN LA EDUCACIÓN PÚBLICA EN LA GRAN BRETAÑA DE CAMERON

Tuve la suerte de estudiar 3º de Ciencias Económicas en la Universidad de Kent, University of Kent at Canterbury, entre 1988 y 1989 en el primer año de existencia del programa Erasmus aunque no supe qué era eso de Erasmus ni oí ese nombre hasta que regresé.

En esos 10 meses completé mi primer ciclo universitario, diplomatura, y obtuve el título británico de ese ciclo, university diploma. Desde entonces formo parte de la red de antiguos alumnos de esta prestigiosa universidad pública británica y he regresado en un par de ocasiones por diferentes motivos. Conservo amigos de entonces entre alumnos y profesores -ya jubilados-.

Hace unos días recibí esta carta que ahora reproduzco en la que se me explica cual va ser el efecto de los recortes que el gobierno del conservador Cameron ha aplicado a la educación.

Las tasas universitarias por alumno, la matrícula, subirán de 3.000 libras a 9.000 libras al año porque el recorte es de más de 5.000 libras por alumno, en concreto alcanzarán 5.600 libras en el año 2015.

Eso sí, la universidad va a intentar conseguir fondos por su cuenta para doblar sus becas y ayudas y hará un esfuerzo para asegurar buenas condiciones crediticias a los alumnos que se deberán endeudar para pagar sus matrículas.

Mientras esto sucede algunos nos siguen calificando como PIGS, y descalifican los esfuerzos del Gobierno español por asegurar y reforzar el gasto social en la difícil coyuntura económica que vivimos. Incluso, en este mismo país, han tenido que rescatar el sistema financiero privado con fondos públicos.

Una generación entera de británicos va a ver reducidas sus oportunidades drásticamente.

El PP, bueno, no ayuda demasiado a superar la difícil coyuntura e incluso pone a Cameron como ejemplo de lo que hay que hacer...

Pero bueno, la carta lo dice todo.

ID: 88878060 Dear Juan, I’m sure that you are aware of the upcoming changes to state funding for higher education teaching, where Government funding is being replaced by higher fees supported by loans. In order to continue to honour our commitment to deliver high-quality teaching into the future and to provide first-rate facilities on all of our campuses, the University of Kent – like other leading establishments – has decided to set a fee of £9,000 a year for UK and European Union students from 2012. Kent is well placed to move forward in this climate due to its strong financial position and solid research base. However, there is no escaping the fact that by 2015, the reduction in government funding will be the equivalent of £5,600 per student, which, when added to the existing fee of £3,400 gives a fee level of £9,000. The University of Kent currently awards scholarships and bursaries totalling over £3 million each year; ranging from partner school scholarships to encourage local students to continue in education, to awards based on academic, sporting or musical merit, and bursaries to support students experiencing financial hardship. By 2012 we will begin to double this level of support, ensuring that we continue to attract a diverse student body, drawn from a wide range of backgrounds.
